For over a decade, Scott Nimmo and Dominic Mauricio have been instructing ‘Armizare’-style HEMA with the Melbourne Swordplay Guild.
“But there’s a small problem with trying to teach an art form that no longer exists: there’s no one living who knows exactly how it was done back in the day. “No one has had to go off and fight to the death with a sword for a very long while, thankfully. Now, the only way to learn how they used to fight is to go back to the sources,” Nimmo says.
“Of course, it’s all a matter of interpretation and apparently things can get pretty heated in online forums over exactly what is and isn’t correct. “
For the most part, Nimmo’s guys are fighting with actual steel (for which, under the Victorian Government’s tough weapons control act, they need a licence or exemption). {Sometimes, we just don’t know how lucky we are to live in Canada!}

HEMA group ‘Fringe’ will host the Krasnoyarsk regions annual Open Championship – with thirty fighters from three groups coming in to fight longsword and something called ‘classical duelling’. The winner of this ‘regional competition gets to go forward to represent Irkutsk at the national Blade Master 2015 in Yekaterinburg.

The ‘Maltese Cross’ {sorry, We couldn’t find a link for this and the other two Russian groups} HEMA group takes things ‘seriously’ having 25 athletes training ‘weekly’; and within that group, they have six ‘professionals’ whom spar twice a day, five times a week. The result of this intensity is that one of their members ranked 8th in individual combat during the last Battle of the Nations.
