Axe throwing is an exciting and satisfying activity that’s easier to learn than you might think. Whether you’re looking to impress your friends or just try something new, mastering the basics will set you up for success.
Choose the Right Equipment
Before you start throwing, make sure you have the right axe. For beginners, a balanced, comfortable throwing axe is essential. Throwing axes are typically lighter and shorter than traditional wood-cutting axes, making them easier to control.
Perfect Your Stance
Your stance is the foundation of a successful throw. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and position yourself about 12 to 15 feet from the target. If you’re right-handed, place your left foot slightly forward; if you’re left-handed, do the opposite.
Master Your Grip
There are two common grip styles:
One-Handed Grip
Hold the handle near the bottom with your dominant hand. Your wrist should stay firm but not too tense. This grip offers more control once you’ve developed your technique.
Two-Handed Grip
Place both hands on the handle, one above the other, similar to holding a baseball bat. This grip provides more stability and is great for beginners.
The Throwing Motion
- Start with the axe behind your head, keeping your elbows slightly bent
- Bring the axe forward in a controlled motion - imagine you’re throwing a soccer ball overhead
- The best time to let go is when your hands are in front of your forehead
- Allow your arms to continue moving forward naturally after releasing the axe
Control the Rotation
A well-thrown axe should spin once before hitting the target. If the handle hits the target instead of the blade, you may be standing too close. If the blade strikes with the top edge, try stepping back slightly.
Focus on Precision, Not Power
Power isn’t as important as precision. Keep your eyes on the bullseye and throw smoothly rather than forcefully. Relax your grip, trust the technique, and let the axe do the work.
Practice Makes Perfect
Like any skill, axe throwing improves with practice. Focus on consistency - repeating the same motion each time. Start slow, build muscle memory, and gradually increase your confidence.
