Sword fighting represents more than athletics - it combines physical skill, mental discipline, and historical connection. Whether you’ve dreamed of wielding a blade since childhood or recently discovered the art through film and media, here’s what you should know before taking your first lesson.

1. Understand the Basics

Sword fighting isn’t just about swinging a blade - it’s a discipline that requires precision and control. The fundamentals include:

Technique: You’ll learn proper stances, footwork, and strikes. These building blocks form the foundation for everything else.

Control: Effective swordplay means striking precisely without excessive force. Power comes from technique, not muscle.

Safety: Protecting yourself and your training partners is paramount. You’ll learn how to move, strike, and defend in ways that keep everyone safe.

2. Choose Your Discipline

At Academie Duello, we teach Duello Armizare, rooted in Italian medieval and Renaissance traditions. Training encompasses longsword, rapier, spear, poleaxe, and dagger.

Beginners typically start with one of two weapons:

Longsword: A two-handed weapon emphasizing power and elegance. The longsword offers a complete martial system with cuts, thrusts, and grappling.

Rapier: A lighter, one-handed sword focusing on speed and precision. The rapier rewards tactical thinking and timing.

Both are excellent starting points - your choice often comes down to what appeals to you aesthetically and physically.

3. Invest in the Right Gear (Eventually)

Starting sword fighting doesn’t require a big upfront investment. We provide beginner equipment for all classes.

As you progress, you might consider:

  • Practice swords (wooden or synthetic trainers)
  • Protective gear (fencing mask, throat protector, gloves)
  • Training clothing (flexible, breathable fabrics with supportive footwear)

Your instructors will guide you on when and what to purchase based on your progression.

4. Be Ready to Learn and Practice

Expect structured lessons that combine physical conditioning with technical instruction. Sword fighting develops both body and mind - you’ll work on strength, flexibility, and coordination while also developing focus and tactical thinking.

Regular practice is essential to building confidence and improving your skills. Like any martial art, progress comes through consistent training.

5. Connect with History and Community

Learning historical swordplay connects you to medieval battles and Renaissance duels. You’ll study techniques preserved in centuries-old manuscripts, bringing history to life through your practice.

You’ll also join a community of fellow practitioners who share your interests. The camaraderie of training partners becomes one of the most rewarding aspects of the martial arts journey.

6. Start with a Reputable School

Select schools offering beginner-friendly classes, experienced instructors, and safety prioritization. A good school creates a supportive environment where questions are welcomed and progress is celebrated.

At Academie Duello, we’ve been teaching historical European martial arts since 2004. Our beginner courses are designed specifically for people with no prior experience.
